(Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter) located in Santa Barbara, CA last December 14th. The approximate age of Cookie is a bit over a year. As an adult Cookie topped the charts at 1,658 grams. She has successfully reached a plateau to a hefty 1,614 (3 lbs, 8 oz).

Congratulations Cookie! You now are an official member. Check out some photos of Cookie and her best friend Nutmeg.

Nutmeg was rescued from B.U.N.S. in California on the same day as Cookie. Nutmeg was only 200 grams when I brought her home and she has not gone over 942 grams. She is now a year of age and is on the same diet as Cookie. Their difference confirms how a lot of the weight is genetic.

November 14, 2007 - Mourning the Loss of Alf

It is with much sadness that I must post that Alf, Gwen's baby, has made his journey over to the Rainbow Bridge.

September 14, 2007 - Remembering the Life of Jan the Boar

It is with much sadness that I must post that Jan the Boar (Master of Janneke) made his journey to the Rainbow Bridge on September 4, 2007. Since coming to live with Janneke in January of 2006, Jan shared his life journey with us over the Guinea Pig Daily Digest. Let's celebrate his life by remembering some of these moments.

Janneke's Mom first adopted Jan and another piggy (Piet) from a German pet store in 2005. When Janneke visited her mom at Christmas, Jan charmed his way into Janneke and the Winky Girls' heart and home. Rumor has it, Jan had a particular soft spot for Suus. It is no wonder Janneke often referred to him as a "Casanova."

One of the first experiences we shared with Jan the Boar, was his first bath. He sure was cute!
Later that year, the Winky Girls and Jan the Boar were invited to the Royal Wedding of Lady Jasmine and Prince Biscuit. Jan escorted his lady Suus to the big event and even performed with Charlie, Chester and Snowball of the infamous Rumblestrut Blues.

Performing with the Rumblestrut Blues helped Jan realize his singing talent. At Christmas time, he sang the solo "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas."

In March of 2007, Jan was selected as the official Pet of the Day. Read it here.

Jan the Boar also participated in the PigOlympics at Lake Elsinore. Because he loved to reconstruct furniture in his spare time at home, he flew to Lake Elsinore earlier than most of the other piggy participants to help built the Olympic village. Once it was built, he participated as a star player on both the soccer and baseball team. He showed off his muscles during the Cilantro Pull and strutted his stuff in the Piggie Train. And of course, he made the crowd go wild as he performed with the Rumblestrut Blues.

Let's not forget, one of Jan's greatest accomplishments. Jan became a LAPS member in June weighing just over 3lbs. His slave was so surprised of his achievement since he allowed his ladies to eat first.

I could never put into words how special Jan the Boar was as well as his slave. This is from Janneke's post on the GPDD:

"He was extremely sweet. He loved to cuddle. I sometimes felt that if he only had had longer paws, he would have wrapped them around me. Instead he just pushed his nose firmly in my neck. He made an excellent piggy puddle. When he stretched out on your lap, enjoying being stroked, I had a whole lap covered in hair. He also made piggy-airkisses every morning when i came to bring the pigs their food. Handling him was the easiest thing ever. I could do anything with him. Just this Friday i discovered that he loved it when I laid him on his back, and rubbed his belly. It made him smile the piggysmile (upper lips parted) I will never forget that last smile. When I petted him in his cage, he would sometime roll over, just because he forgot to stand while he was enjoying being petted.

He was also very gentle towards his ladies. Every morning when i brought the veggies, he would stand waiting in a corner of the cage until his girls received their veggies. Only then would he run towards me and get his own veggies.

Although he was very sweet, this did not mean that he did not have a mind of his own. He could be very strong headed. For example, when he decided that he wanted to remodel my new table. Not even yukkie perfume sprayed on the table legs could keep him from his mission. Or every time when my sisters boyfriend fed him his vitamine c and he refused to take it from me for at least a week. Trying to tell me that uncle erwins pills were mucht yummier (or telling me to get a boyfriendslave, i dont know ;-) ).

Jan had the biggest nose. People who have met him, always say that he looks like a rabbit.

That was also one of his nicknames, 'neus' (which is dutch for Nose, it's pronounciation is similar to 'noise' ). I also just called him 'beertje' (which is dutch for little boar/bear and is pronounced as 'Birtjah'. boar and bear are the same word in dutch and this title fitted him perfectly)
Jan (i'm sorry to say this ;-) ) had a very girly wheek. It was so funny. It was soft and high, like a little shy 3-year old girl. I will miss that sound.. it always made me smile."

Jan, we're going to miss you. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Jan leaves behind his slave, Janneke, his herum named the Southern Winky Girls of Suus and Yaya, his Aunt Mieke, his cousins, Dunya, Lotje and Guiny. I run around a lot and like to climb on and over things. I am what they call in LAPS terms an Arnie pig (Arnold Schwarzenegger, as compared to a Danny Pig which is short for Danny de Vito) I am not really a cuddly pig, I prefer to lick my slave (anything will do, hands feet, lower back, legs arms or lips). I am very vocal and will let my slave know what I think about everything (especially that she needs to hurry up with those veggies).

How old are you?
I just turned two years old and had a magnificent birthdayparty with many gpdd members and especially my LAPS friend Daisy.

Happy Belated Birthday Suus! Snowball made his journey to the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, August 25th. He was 5 years and 2 months old.

Snowball was an extraordinary pig that lived his life to the fullest. He was a LAPS piggy despite having a malocclusion. For the past couple of years, Snowball had to have his molars and incisors trimmed by his vet every month. The procedure left his teeth sore for several days but he managed to maintain his LAPS weight despite the troubles. Much of the credit can be given to his slave, Carla, who lovingly syringed him critical care and fed him more edible portions of his favorite treats. Snowball was also the drummer of the infamous band, the Rumblestrut Blues. He even had the opportunity to write his own song with the help of his brother Snickers entitled Super Wheek. You may remember jamming to this song at the Piggy Olympics earlier this year. Snowball loved to travel too. He rode on his favorite airline, PigAir, to places like England, France, Lake Elsinore and California (to see his girlfriend Cookie). Snowball leaves behind his slaves (Carla and Tony), his brother Apache and his doggy brother Fluffy. Let's welcome our newest member, ironically named, Minnie. I recently flew out on PigAir to meet Minnie. I mean, with a name like Minnie, I just had to meet her. When I asked her to tell me her story, this is what she had to say:

"Mom got me last October from Karen of Cavy Rescue New England. Mom says I'm one of the sweetest piggies she's ever had, and I spend lots of time with mom's four year old great neice, Bethan. Mom has made it her mission to make sure Bethan is a pig person, and, with my help, is succeeding!
I live with my adopted sister Pippin, who was rescued from a home in Wakfield MA. Our other roomies are Petunia and Corkster. They are a biological mother/daughter team, and, while I love them dearly, they can be quite the divas! They are portly piggies, but lack the proper body type for LAPS piggies, poor dears. I hate to sound crude but, well, they're abys and I've always found them a tad less ample than we Americans. But they certainly enjoy a good meal!"

Congratulations Minnie and welcome to the club!

A Congratulations also is due to Minnie's adopted sister Pippin. She officially joined the roster as a LAPS piggy in training. Pippin weighs just a bit shy of 3lbs. but fortunately Minnie is her personal trainer. Minnie reports on her progress: "I am trying hard with Pippin, but have my doubts. She uses too much energy running back and forth when she hears the fridge, and biting the cage with her toofies to make sure Mommy notices her. I keep trying to tell her a couple subtle "bwoot bwoot bwoots" will get her the treats without her working up a sweat, but she won't listen!"

August 19, 2007 - Warm Welcomes to Sugar, Our Newest Member

Please extend a warm welcome to our newest member, Sugar. Sugar is 5 years old and weighs a lovely 3lbs. 2oz. She lives in Arkansas with her cousins. She hasn't always lived in Arkansas though. She's originally from New York City but when her first cage mate passed on to the Rainbow Bridge, her slave thought she would be less lonely if she moved in with her cousins. A fun plane ride later, she now resides in Arkansas. She has adjusted living with her cousins and has mastered that art of begging for snacks. Now she's loving life as a large, ample piggy. Her cousins are adjusting to her too but her cousin Cindy is a bit green with jealously, she only weighs 2lbs., 8oz. That's okay Cindy, we'll sign you up as a LAPS pig in training.

August 15, 2007 - Welcome Our Newest Member - Baisil!

Baisil is the newest LAPS member weighing in at 3.5 lbs.!
